Chinese Silver Panda coins debuted in 1983, but have only been regularly issued in a bullion version since 1989. The 1983-1985 Chinese Silver Pandas were less than 1 Troy oz in weight and had just .900 silver content. No silver coins were issued in 1986. The 1987 coins had an established standard of .999 silver content and 1 Troy oz weight.

The bears are distinctive and easy to spot courtesy of their white-and-black fur, with most creatures having black patches of fur around the eyes.
