The 2021 30 Gram Chinese Silver Panda Coin

The Silver Panda Coin has been minted every year since 1989 and is one of the most prominent silver bullion items for sale. Panda coins were initially minted in quantities of one ounce until 2016 when the Chinese Mint chose to move to the metric system by issuing 30-gram pandas. The Panda is still minted using .999 silver bullion despite the change in weight.

There was a maximum mintage of 255,000 for the 1989 Silver Panda. The mintage estimates have fluctuated significantly since then but in recent years they have improved. The 2021 Silver Panda will have a 10,000,000 coin mintage making it one of the only silver coins that currently have a mintage limit on them.  Compared to other silver coins, this restricted mintage is why you can see a higher premium on the silver panda. Due to their cap, however, previous years of pandas have seen excellent premium appreciation compared to coins like the Silver Eagle and Silver Maple.

The 2021 Silver Panda shows a growing panda cub learning the tips and tricks of survival from its mother. The face value of 10 yuan is minted to the panda’s left with the coin’s specifications of “30g Ag .999” are minted above its head. This side of the coin is often thought of as the obverse, but in fact, the Panda design has always been the reverse side of the design.

Although every year the Chinese Mint updates the reverse, the obverse is the same as all other Chinese Silver and Gold Pandas, with the center of the design depicting the Temple of Heaven. a wonderful example of Chinese architecture. The structure was completed in 1420, but not until 1918 was it opened to the public. An elevated edge with “2021” at the bottom and “China” minted in Chinese characters is circling the temple on the obverse.
